$10mil spend on new military tech link
A new spy base in Western Australian will boost the real-time communications for military operations of the United States.
Both governments will put in for the $10 million project at the Australian Defence satellite communications station near Geraldton in WA.
The new ground station is reportedly designed to support the Teleport system; the next generation of high-speed military communications.
The Teleport system will provide direct access to multi-frequency military and commercial satellite communications for the United States’ Wideband Global System (WGS) - a team of six US satellites in orbiting fixed parts of the world.
The authorities say this will allow Australian and US forces to respond more quickly to military events.
Teleport stations are designed to provide US defence personnel with “multiband, multimedia and worldwide access” to the US defence information systems network (DISN) at anywhere in the world, “far exceeding” current capabilities. It is unclear what level of access Australian defence forces will have.
“Ground facilities are strategically located across the globe to provide continuous cover for communications uplink, downlink, satellite control, and connections to terrestrial communication networks," the US defence department said in project documents.
“The DoD Teleport System at Geraldton is particularly advantageous for access to the WGS satellite constellation because it can see up to five WGS satellites.”
The US Department of Defence is spending millions worldwide on a five-year program to upgrade satellite communications (SATCOM) gateways on the DISN.
US Defence says it will have the new facility up and running by June 2016.
The Geraldton site was selected due to its existing facilities, open space and security personnel, but it will need upgrades for much of its equipment and electricity supplies.
