Research firm Telsyte has found that the National Broadband Network (NBN) direct fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connections will exceed ADSL services by 2015, with an estimated three million connections in 2015 and 4.2 million by 2017.

Telsyte also found that if the Federal Coalition wins power in the 2013 election, the number of connections will be limited to only 700,000 by 2017.

"If the Coalition wins power in 2013, we expect the new government will stall the NBN while it goes through the Productivity Commission and policy reviews for the initial term of government. If this happens the market will swing back to DSL and optical fibre will only be connected to around 700,000 premises by the end of 2017,” Telsyte’s director of research consulting Chris Couglan said.
