Melbourne Uni announces new IT department
The University of Melbourne’s School Of Engineering will open the new Department of Computing and Information Systems (CIS) at the start of 2012.
CIS brings together the staff, students and programs from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering in the Melbourne School of Engineering, and the Department of Information Systems in the Faculty of Science.
The university has announced ‘significant effort’ into the redesigning of its IT courses in the light of the reformed department. At the undergraduate level, new majors in “Computing and Software Systems” and “Informatics” will be introduced in 2012. The graduate programs to be offered by the new department are currently under review for changes to phase in from 2013, but all currently enrolled students will be able to complete their courses as planned.
“Computing and Information are the keys that will unlock a whole new wave of technological advance in the 21st century, and it is critically important that we provide programs that encourage enquiring students to capitalise on these dramatic advances,” Dean of Engineering, Professor Iven Mareels, said
