A report published by Deloitte has concluded that the strength of online transactions is fast becoming a selling point for Australia's retailers.

The report, authored by Deloitte's national technology, media and telecommunications leader Damien Tampling, cites the growing trend towards online retail in Australia as a indication of the sector's future.

"In fact, some of Australia’s most successful online start-ups at the moment are retailers, such as consumer electronics specialist Kogan. Others have come from a retail background, such as the founders of discount merchandise outlet CatchOfTheDay and whitegoods merchant Appliances Online," Mr Tampling said.

Mr Tampling urges retailers to adapt to the changing retail environments, saying that many retailers are indeed failing to capitalize on the growth of the online retail environment.

"Almost all retailers should be focused on online for two key reasons: growth and superior margins. Analysts expect total online retail sales in Australia to grow from $16.9 billion in 2009 to $33.3 billion in 2015. This figure includes online purchases from local and overseas stores, and both online-only and bricks-and-mortar retail outlets," Mr Tampling said.
