A new website has been created to enhance understanding of soil science and management.

Developed by SoilsWest with support from Murdoch University and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the Soil Quality Knowledge Base compiles evidence-based information on soil properties, management, and testing.

This initiative aims to promote productive and sustainable use of soil in agricultural and natural resource industries.

Associate Professor Frances Hoyle, Co-Director of SoilsWest and a member of Murdoch University's Food Futures Institute, says it was a major challenge to access and translate extensive soil research into practical guidance.

“There’s a large legacy of information out there from decades of dedicated research by a diversity of different organisations working together and successfully collaborating with farmers and the agricultural industry,” said Associate Professor Hoyle.

“The Soil Quality Knowledge Base helps in bringing the evidence base together and providing engaging insights and summaries.”

Since 2017, SoilsWest has published 10 ebooks in the Soil Quality series, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

The new website allows for broader dissemination of this knowledge. It also incorporates recent innovations and discoveries in soil science, ensuring up-to-date information for current farming systems.

The website is divided into three main sections: soil attributes (biological, chemical, and physical properties), soil management, and soil analysis and testing.

Users can search and filter the curated collection of resources, which includes videos, case studies, publications, illustrations, and fact sheets.

Regular updates are planned to include new insights from ongoing research.
