The Northern Territory has announced amendments to the Classification of Publications, Films and Computer Games Bill which will see video games rated along the same lines as films, with the availability of an R18+ rating.

The announcement comes after the Federal Government’s decision to revise the guidelines for classification of computer games and introduce a nationwide R18+ classification at the start of next year.  The changes will bring the classification of computer games in line with that of films to include G (general), PG (parental guidance), M (mature), MA15+ (mature accompanied), R18+ (restricted) and RC (refuse classification).

Territory Attorney-General John Elferink said the amendments in the Northern Territory will enable and regulate the sale, delivery and exhibition of computer games that have been classified R18+.

“The R18+ classification recognised that the gaming community is diverse and adult gamers will now be able to purchase games of an adult nature,” Mr Elferink said.

“It also provides guidance for adults purchasing games to make an informed decision about whether the computer game is something they want to view or use, and if it is appropriate for young members of their family.

Territory Parliament will consider the amendments early next week.
