Weather-watchers turning off
Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) staff nationwide are beginning a fortnight of industrial action.
The action is in response to three years of failed pay negotiations.
It means that employees who are members of the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) will ignore media requests and not update the BoM Twitter feed, unless there is a severe weather event.
CPSU deputy secretary Beth Vincent-Pietsch says staff will also not answer internal emails or telephone calls.
“This is definitely a last resort for our members,” she said.
“They've had massive restructures in the bureau and so many of these staff have had to relocate, their jobs have changed, there is so much job insecurity as they move to automating the services.
“Our members just want to be able to keep what they've got in terms of paying conditions, and just have a fair pay rise put on the table and I don't that there is anyone that thinks that isn't a reasonable ask.”
Employment Minister Michaelia Cash is yet to comment on the matter.
