Position Description
ASD are seeking a dynamic Senior Executive to fill the First Assistant Director-General Cyber Threat Intelligence role (SES Band 2 level). 

The Cyber Threat Intelligence Division performs a range of intelligence, incident response and technical cyber security functions to keep Australian’s secure online, inform the development of policy and safeguard Australia’s sensitive information and networks. Key functions include:

  • technical advice and assistance to victims of cyber incidents; 
  • malware analysis, 
  • threat hunting and active vulnerability assessments; 
  • activities to counter high harm cyber adversaries, including working with domestic and international partners to develop and deliver counter-cybercrime operations. 
  • production of a range of products on high harm cyber actors and activities targeting Australia, from unclassified technical advice on malicious cyber activity through to classified intelligence and assessments.

As division head, you will be a key member of the ASD leadership team, responsible for leading and influencing a high-performing division of technical specialists and cyber analysts. You will be expected to:

  • use inclusive leadership to lead a high tempo division comprising a diverse range of technical and subject matter experts;
  • exercise high-level judgement, and foster innovation to resolve complex technical and intelligence problems;
  • think laterally, lead through change and provide contestability in decision making; and
  • demonstrate resilience and take personal accountability for achieving results.

ASD is also delivering a significant new program of work, and your leadership and superior change management skills will be key to ensuring ASD maintains existing missions whilst also delivering new outcomes for the organisation. You will manage significant staff and budget resources, leverage strategic industry relationships and co-operatively engage with customers and stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to enhance current practices in pursuit of greater efficiencies, driving transformation and continuous improvement.

As a SES2 officer you will you will influence the strategic direction of ASD and work with colleagues across the Defence portfolio and Government to achieve results. Responsibilities and attributes of a senior leader include: 

  • Provide superior leadership and management of a Division
  • Provide high quality advice and innovative solutions to the Minister, Director-General, the Senior Executive and senior staff. 
  • Build an organisational culture where leadership, professionalism, collaboration, and corporate behaviour in supporting a unified ASD are valued and rewarded. 
  • Deliver outcomes through effective management of resources. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships inside and outside the organisation. 
  • Contribute productively to ASD’s corporate decision-making processes.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis. To be eligible, applicants must be Australian citizens. These are security-designated positions and the successful applicants will be required to hold or obtain a Positive Vetting security clearance

A Merit Pool of highly suitable candidates will be established to fill similar vacancies that may occur within the next 18 months.
