Australia and Singapore have signed a potentially pivotal agreement to advance safe and ethical AI.

The two nations have formalised a partnership aimed at advancing safe and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) development through a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement builds on an existing collaboration between the two nations and is intended to align with their shared commitment to technological innovation.

Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic announced the MoU during a recent visit to Singapore, alongside Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo.

The agreement is designed to facilitate cooperation on AI safety, workforce development, and the deployment of ethical frameworks.

“For the huge benefits of AI to be fully realised it needs to be trusted, with international partnerships an important way to ensure checks and balances are in place globally,” Husic said.

The MoU sets a foundation for broad cooperation, including joint research initiatives on AI safety and ethics, sharing best practices, and fostering talent development.

It prioritises ethical governance and a human-centric approach to AI adoption, aligning with the objectives of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes.

“This MoU marks another meaningful milestone between Singapore and Australia,” said Teo.

“By fostering public trust through the development and deployment of responsible AI, we can fully unlock the transformative potential of AI.”

The collaboration aims to drive innovation through research and development, establish test beds for AI applications, and ensure AI technologies align with international standards.

It also hopes to support public understanding and acceptance of AI by promoting education and outreach.
